Editing an audio track is not hard for most people, if the file is an MP3, WAVE or other popular formats. But MIDI files are a different matter. While WAVE files are basically recorded sound waves, a MIDI file contains data and instructions like musical notes, when to play them and so on. However, this does not mean that it is impossible to edit MIDI files. With SynthFont, you can use sound source files, such as SoundFonts, GigaSampler or SFZ files and more, in order to edit and play MIDI files.

SynthFont can be downloaded and used for free. The software's setup file is 7.31 Mb large and it can be installed on all popular Windows editions. The system requirements are not high, so you can run the program even with modest hardware.

The interface will not go easy on novice users. It is full of options, found under four separate navigation tabs. Fortunately, a tutorial is available on the software's web page and if you already know a thing or two about MIDI files, the software's many features can be mastered quickly. The supported files can be imported by browsing for them under the first tab. Before importing them, the files can be played, under the same tab and the selection you make can be saved.

The second navigation tab features a piano roll with all the audio track's notes. The tools you will find on the lower area will let you draw new notes on the piano roll, edit existing ones and more. Besides notes, you may also make adjustments regarding pitch, volume, balance, tempo and much more. This can be done by drawing a line or curve on a grid, beneath the piano roll.

The program's collection of MIDI events can be found under the third tab. They will be displayed in a list, along with their details, and you can filter them by meta events, controllers, note on or off, program and more. The option found under the fourth tab will let you add new events or change the existing ones. They are listed on the lower half of the interface and they can be added in different ways. You can either import them from files on your hard drive, create one with the aid of a virtual piano keyboard or select a preset. There are 127 sounds you can add from a context menu, after clicking an Add button, placed above the events list. Options for adjusting the playback volume, its range, adding output VST effects and more can be found on the upper half of the interface. If you take your time to look around the interface and with the aid of the provided tutorial, from the developer's web page, you will have no trouble adjusting to the software.

Pros

SynthFont offers very flexible tools for editing MIDI files. It features a rich library of pre set sound events and you can add as many as you need and edit them in various ways.

Cons

Beginners may have some trouble adapting to the software's complex interface. Any aspect of a MIDI file can be edited with SynthFont. Its large collection of presets and flexible options will enable you to edit MIDI files like a pro.
